Gaines' 'The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman' ('we should teach history to kids with books like this one'), Manuel Muñoz's 'What You See in the Dark' ('delicious') and Jessica Hagedorn's 'Toxicology,' which is on her bedside keeping company with Edwidge Danticat's 'Create Dangerously.' "
